Description
A detached, painted rendered two-storey Modernist house constructed around 1968, set on a slightly elevated site on the north side of Old Coleraine Road. The building is enclosed by low rendered walls and accessed via a steep bitumac front drive and lawn with replacement timber gates.
The house has a distinctive L-shaped plan with a flat concrete roof supported on a series of concrete beams, which are exposed to the overhanging eaves. The walls are painted concrete with square-headed window openings featuring concrete sills and replacement timber windows. The front elevation comprises a series of rectangular masses, abutted by a replacement timber glazed entrance porch with a flat concrete roof. The side elevation planes project forward to form textured concrete fins that frame a full-width mural panel on the upper floor.
The mural is a significant feature, comprising six vertical sculpted panels of abstract design finished with monochrome paint, and is possibly by Irish artist Colin Middleton. The ground floor extends to the right as a single-storey block, while a single-storey flat-roofed double-garage structure adjoins the south side elevation. The north side elevation includes glazed panels between the concrete beams and is abutted by a single-storey projection. The rear elevation was not recorded.
Although the windows and porch have been replaced, the building retains its bold Modernist appearance and serves as a frame for the mural. The architect responsible for the dwelling is not known with certainty, though there is a possibility of collaboration between Colin Middleton and local architect Noel Campbell, similar to their work at 108 Strand Road, Portstewart. The house continues to be used as a private dwelling and is locally significant as one of the most architecturally distinguished domestic structures constructed in Portstewart during the mid-twentieth century.
