Description

Red House was a detached two-storey house with basement at sides and rear, constructed around 1834 on Castleroe Road near Coleraine, County Londonderry. It was designed by Matthew Colwell for Stephen Bennett Esq of Greenfield.

The building presented a three-bay façade with a hipped and slated roof. The walls were rendered roughcast. The side elevation facing the river extended to four bays wide and retained glazing bars in double-hung sash windows. The opposite side featured some casement windows. The principal façade incorporated a central nine-pane window on the upper floor flanked by casement windows. The entrance was set within an elliptical-arched opening with a radial fanlight and was flanked either side by twelve-pane double-hung sash windows. A small two-storey projection was added to the rear at a later date.

The house was originally recorded as "Bann View" on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1849–50 and was set within formal gardens. The 1835 Ordnance Survey Memoir described it as square on plan, two storeys high, constructed of dark stone with an umbrella roof, and noted for its picturesque setting near the Cutts waterfall. At that time the house was unoccupied with little development in the immediate surroundings.

In Griffith's Valuation of 1856, the property was valued at £10 and was owned by Thomas Bennett Esq. Charles Frazer became the first occupant in 1856. By the General Revisions of 1860–63, the valuation had increased to £14 5s. The building remained under Bennett family ownership until the early twentieth century. The name changed from Bann View to Red House in 1896 when the Reverend Edmund Bennett became both owner and resident. The Ordnance Survey 25-inch map of 1904 first captioned it as Red House. Maps from the subsequent period show little change to the building's outline except for the rear extension.

The site lies on the southern bank of the River Bann, south-east of Coleraine near the village of Ballyness. The entrance gates, with rendered brick walls and square piers supporting decorative iron gates, remain along Castleroe Road. An overgrown bridge spanning a small river and two ruinous buildings flank the site, which is bounded by mature trees.

During the late twentieth century the house became vacant and deteriorated. In March 1988, the Heritage Council was consulted regarding its demolition and advised that this was justifiable given its very poor condition and the proximity of an industrial plant. The building was demolished around 1988. The site is currently vacant and overgrown with no trace of the building remaining.
