Description

A pedimented sandstone segmental-headed archway commemorating Maud Houston, dated 1906 and designed by Vincent Craig. The arch stands in the grounds of Coleraine Academical Institution on the north side of Castlerock Road in Coleraine town centre, where it serves as the entrance to the school playing fields and has group value with the Institution itself.

The monument is constructed of ashlar red Dumfries sandstone and comprises a triangular pediment supported on two piers with buttresses and a fluted frieze. The arch itself is segmental-headed with a central keystone. Stone steps from the south lead to a set of Art Nouveau-style composite iron gates. The classical triumphal arch style is tempered by the wavy design of the cast iron gates, which betrays Craig's interest in the Art Nouveau movement and does not quite conform to classical principles.

Two metal frames set into decorative scrolled arch carved frames on either pier contain glazed oval photographs of Maud Houston. The left photograph depicts her as a young woman and is embossed with the text "O WE WILL WALK THIS WORLD / YOKED IN ALL EXERCISE OF NOBLE END". The right photograph shows her in later life and is embossed with "AND SO THRO' THOSE DARK GATES / ACROSS THE WILD THAT NO MAN KNOWS". These lines are from the final stanza of Lord Alfred Tennyson's poem The Princess. The south pediment bears a moulded plaque of the school crest. The inscription to the south side of the entablature reads "ANNO DOMINI 1906". The inscription to the north side commemorates Maud Houston as the wife of T. G. Houston, Principal of the Institution, stating: "THESE PLAYING FIELDS WERE PURCHASED AND PRESENTED TO THE SCHOOL BY OLD BOYS AND OTHER FRIENDS AS A MEMORIAL OF MAUD, WIFE OF T. G. HOUSTON, PRINCIPAL OF THE INSTITUTION WHO FOR MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS DEVOTED HER MANY GIFTS OF HEAD AND HEART UNTIRINGLY TO THE WELFARE OF THE SCHOOL AND ENRICHED THE TOWN & NEIGHBOURHOOD BY A LIFE OF NOBLE ENDEAVOUR."

The arch was erected in 1906 as a memorial to Maud Houston, who died that year. The playing fields were purchased by old boys and other friends of the school and presented as a memorial to her memory. T. G. Houston served as the second principal of the Institution from 1870 until his retirement in 1915, and Maud had devoted more than thirty years to the welfare of the school.

Vincent Craig (1869–1925) was a Belfast-based architect and the younger brother of James Craig, the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. Craig was apprenticed to W. H. Lynn during his early education and spent a year travelling in Europe before establishing an independent practice in 1891. He was a key proponent of the emerging Art Nouveau movement, which was popular during the Edwardian period and emphasised asceticism of design over functionalism.

The site is bounded by modern pebbledash walls and modern metal railings supported on concrete piers. The arch was first depicted on the fourth edition of the Ordnance Survey map of 1923. The memorial arch was listed in 1977 and has since been well maintained by Coleraine Academical Institution, retaining all its original features and showing only minor signs of deterioration.
