Description

Ballymaglin House is a two-storey Georgian former farmhouse with associated outhouses, likely dating from the mid-18th century, specifically between 1760 and 1779. A date stone on the west gable reads "T C 1764." The main house is a long, two-storey rendered structure, originally likely single-storey, extended to two storeys around 1800. It has an asbestos slated, gabled roof and is positioned at right angles to Aghanloo Road. Attached at the upper end and in line is a single-storey stone outhouse, composed of a wider section matching the house's width and a narrower section. The wider section of the outhouse is roofed with stone Sperrin slates, while the narrower section uses Bangor blue slates. Across the yard and at an angle to the house’s main axis stands another single-storey slated outhouse. A flat-roofed, two-storey back return, containing the staircase, extends from the rear of the house and aligns with the third bay. The main entrance door, on the north elevation, is flanked by two narrow windows, one illuminating the kitchen and the other the hallway. All house windows have been recently replaced with black-stained top-hung windows, with the exception of the kitchen’s original window. Two chimneys are present. The rainwater goods are cast iron. Notable features also include simple whitewashed gate piers and a strap wrought iron gate.

A staircase was moved around 1931, when the property was under the ownership of a Scottish farmer, Mr. Moody. The house was more recently renovated with assistance from the Northern Ireland Heritage Environment. The current owner inherited the property in 1997 from Mrs. Robinson. The house is recorded on the 1831 Ordnance Survey Sheet and was occupied by a James Stewart in 1858, when the Marquis of Waterford was the lessor.
