Description
Boundary Marker at Glenside Bridge, Belmont Road
A cast-iron boundary post marking what was originally the perimeter of Belfast Corporation's administrative jurisdiction. Probably cast and installed in 1896–98, the post was later adapted in 1918 by the addition of a plaque, though the structure itself predates this inscription by roughly two decades.
The post stands embedded in the south-western abutment of Glenside Bridge. It has a slightly tapered cylindrical profile, measuring approximately 0.7 metres high by 0.25 metres in diameter, and is fitted with a banded octagonal base and an oversailing flat octagonal cap with a slightly smaller fluted circular upstand. The front face, the only visible side, bears the shield of Belfast Corporation's coat of arms. Below this is an attached plaque with crisp lettering reading "Parliamentary/ and Municipal/ Boundary of/ Belfast/ Victoria Division/ Victoria Ward/ 1918". The plaque is secured to the post with four countersunk screws.
Evidence from the 1902 Ordnance Survey map shows a boundary post marked in this vicinity, confirming that the structure is earlier than the plaque date and dates from at least 1896–98. The design is consistent with a boundary post dated 1858 on the west side of High Street, Holywood, County Down, suggesting continuity or reuse of the design pattern across the local area.
The post marks what became in 1918 the limit of the County of the Borough of Belfast, a boundary created under the Local Government Act 1898 and enacted in 1899. This course followed the municipal boundary established by the Belfast Corporation Act of 1896, which itself largely tracked the Parliamentary boundary as it stood after 1885. The post's location places it within the boundary of the Victoria parliamentary division, created following the 1918 Representation of the People Act (Fourth Reform Act), which abolished Belfast's four previous constituencies—North, East, West, and South—and established nine new constituencies including Victoria. This post marks the boundary of Victoria division and Victoria ward within it. The 1918 date on the plaque is historically significant: it marks the year of the General Election of 14 December 1918, which saw women candidates standing for Parliament for the first time and the extension of the franchise to men over 21 and women over 30, while also being the first election completed within a single day. Following the establishment of the devolved parliament for Northern Ireland in 1922, the Victoria constituency, created only four years earlier, was abolished and the previous Belfast seats restored. Belfast Corporation itself was superseded by Belfast City Council in 1973. Many surviving boundary posts from this period are now landlocked within suburban surroundings, functioning as curious pieces of civic furniture that add interest to the city's streetscapes. This post represents an important piece of civic heritage and a material witness to significant political developments in early 20th-century British electoral history.
