Description
Pavilion at Stormont Estate, Massey Avenue, Belfast
This single-storey Neo-Georgian pavilion was constructed in 1936 by the Ministry of Finance, Northern Ireland, as a shelter at the Massey Avenue entrance to the Stormont Estate. The building sits on the north side of Masonry Avenue, opposite the entrance lodge and adjacent to the decorative gates and screens (both listed under HB26/13/021) designed by Arnold Thornley, the architect for Parliament Buildings.
The pavilion has a rectangular floor plan facing south, with a hipped natural slate roof featuring overhanging eaves with sheeted soffit, lead rolled hips and ridge, and half-round painted metal guttering discharging to circular metal downpipes. A concrete frame is expressed externally as geometric pilasters, with small-paned fixed lights and concrete cills having rendered panels below.
The principal elevation, facing south, is symmetrical and consists of three bays with a central square-headed opening flanked by end bays containing twelve-pane fixed lights. A short concrete ramp leads to the interior, flanked by low concrete kerbing and a tubular metal handrail supported on circular section posts with ball finials. The west elevation features a single bay with a tri-partite window comprising a twelve-pane central light flanked by six-pane lights. The east elevation mirrors this arrangement. The north elevation is symmetrical across three bays, with a central tri-partite window of three six-pane lights flanked by twelve-pane lights.
The building sits on a shallow concrete plinth with narrow pathways to the north, east and west sides bordered by lawns. An asphalt footpath to the south provides access via the concrete ramp.
The design reflects the Neo-Georgian style of other buildings on the estate and closely follows the architectural principles of Arnold Thornley's adjoining gate lodge and the Provincial Bank of Ireland on Massey Avenue, sharing features such as the hipped roof. Though the specific architect is unknown, it is clear the design was based on Thornley's established work at Stormont. The pavilion was first depicted on the Ordnance Survey County Series Map of 1938 in its current layout. A similar structure is located to the east beyond the statue of Lord Carson in a woodland setting (HB26/13/052B).
