Description

This is a well-preserved example of a cow-tailed water pump, likely dating from between 1900 and 1919. It stands in a prominent roadside location opposite a terrace of houses that were built for mill workers. The pump is enhanced by a surrounding alcove of walling and railings.

The pump has a closed head lever, a plain spirally decorated column, and a fluted cap topped with an acorn finial. It was not recorded on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map, but appears on maps from 1919 and 1930. According to a local informant, the pump was erected by John Shaw Brown, the mill owner. Further details can be found in the Environment Heritage Service report, “Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey” by Fred Hammond, published in January 1997. The pump is of industrial archaeological interest and has local significance, reflecting social and economic importance of the time. The listing covers the pump itself, along with the surrounding walling and railings.
