Post Box, Edenderry Village, Belfast

This is an early twentieth century cast-iron post box, erected in Edenderry Village between 1901 and 1910. It is a free-standing structure located on the footpath close to the junction of Edenderry Village and Edenderry Cottages. The post box, of standard design, is painted in ‘pillar box red’ with a black base, and bears the maker’s name ‘MCDOWALL. STEVEN & CO LTD LONDON & GLASGOW’. It is 5ft 0in high and measures 21in in diameter at the cap, 15½in at the shaft, and 17in at the base. The design features a shallow, fluted oversailing cap, a hinged door on the left with a raised cup handle and keyhole on the right, a hooded rectangular aperture for letter insertion, and a small holder for a removable plate indicating the next collection day, labelled 'NEXT COLLECTION'. Below this is a notice plate holder providing details of collection days/times, and at the bottom of the notice is a box identification number (BT8 226). The door displays an ‘E R Vll’ cipher, rendered in cursive script with a raised crown above, representing King Edward VII. The post box was originally located at the northwest end of Edenderry Road, opposite the site of a former mill complex, and was moved to its current location in recent decades. It sits within a conservation area.
