Description

Freestanding street sign at the junction of Carolhill Gardens and Holywood Road, Belfast, dating from c.1945-46.

The sign is composed of white glazed ceramic tiles on a black background, displaying the street name "CAROLHILL GARDENS" in slightly elongated sans serif lettering. The individual tiles are approximately 12 centimetres high and of varying widths according to the characters they bear. They are mounted on a cement backing plate, with blank tiles filling the lower row where needed. A moulded tiling frame surrounds the sign, enclosed within a wrought-iron frame. This frame is attached to a fluted cast-iron post topped with a ball finial.

This sign is typical of those produced by Belfast Corporation from the early to mid-20th century. Prior to the early 1900s, street signage in Belfast lacked uniformity, with developers and residents installing signs of varying styles. The move towards standardisation began in late 1904 when the Belfast Corporation's Police Committee established a sub-committee to investigate the matter. Initially enamel signage was proposed, but in July 1907 the council agreed that "in future tile street signs be used in leading thoroughfares, and iron signs in other streets in accordance with the patterns now submitted", and prohibited hanging or projecting signs on main arteries. The widespread adoption of white-on-black ceramic freestanding signs likely dates from around 1907 onwards, possibly beginning with routes served by the city's newly electrified tram system, taken over by the Corporation in 1905.

The freestanding signs were initially supported on fluted cast-iron columns with ball finials, a design that appears to have been superseded from around 1920 onwards by plain metal supports, and subsequently by square-section concrete posts. The concrete version became standard by the early 1930s and continued in use through the 1950s.

Carolhill Gardens itself was laid out in 1945-46, and this sign presumably dates from that time. However, the sign is unusual in that it retains the ornate cast-iron pole characteristic of c.1907-1920, rather than the concrete post that had become standard by the 1940s. This suggests the pole may have been salvaged from elsewhere and recycled, reflecting post-war austerity measures.

Once ubiquitous throughout Belfast's suburbs, many such signs have been lost through redevelopment and wear. Those that survive are now recognised as an important part of the city's civic heritage. This example represents an excellent specimen of its type and an important record of early 20th-century municipal standardisation and urban design.
