Description

Single storey former commercial garage of circa 1920s, now used as a store. The building is set on the east side of Aughlish Road, roughly three-quarters of a mile north-west of Scarva. The structure is double-pile with dimensions of approximately 16 metres by 13 metres. Just over half of the building to the south side, measuring roughly 13 metres by 9 metres, is spanned by a Belfast Truss roof.

The front (west) elevation consists of a double curved gable finished in a mixture of painted roughcast and painted render. The left-hand gable, which conceals what appears to be a very shallow single pitched roof, has a single opening in the form of a large vehicle entrance with a timber sliding door. The gable to the right, which follows the line of the Belfast Truss roof, features a central vehicle entrance with timber double doors and a wicket gate. To either side of this entrance are relatively large square-shaped window openings, now boarded up. Above these openings, moulded lettering spells out the name and title 'G. TEGGART AUTOMOBILE ENGINEER'.

The north and south elevations are finished in unpainted roughcast. The north elevation has two boarded-over window openings. The east elevation of the curved roof section is in shuttered concrete with the gable area itself clad in timber, much of which has fallen away. This section contains two windows and a pedestrian doorway. The east elevation of the pitched roof section is in roughcast and appears to have one window opening.

The pitched roof to the north is covered in corrugated metal, whilst the curved Belfast Truss section to the south is covered in felt and has a central gabled rooflight with corrugated Perspex glazing.

The garage was constructed in the 1920s and continued in use until the late 1990s. The Belfast truss, developed in the mid-nineteenth century to meet demand for efficient, lightweight and long-span roofs brought about by the industrial revolution, features an internal bracing system where members meet on the top curved member rather than at the bottom of the truss. The first known reference to such a curved wooden felted roof structure supported by bowstring girders appears in an advertisement in the Dublin Builder for 1866 by the Belfast firm of felt-makers, McTear & Co., which continued manufacturing trusses until ceasing business in 1908. A second Belfast felt supplier, Anderson & Co., began producing trusses to a slightly different design in 1886. In 1896, Anderson's launched their Mark II version, promoted as maximising long spans while maintaining light weight. This model was subsequently adopted by other companies. The building is of industrial archaeological interest.
