Description
This is a three-storey warehouse located at the bottom of a hill on the south side of John Street, Rathfriland. It was likely constructed between 1900 and 1919, according to the Valuation book, with a probable erection date of 1911, as indicated in the Valuation revision book (VAL 12B/22/20G, p.39) held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.
The building is one of a number of warehouses in the town, though it has been altered and does not warrant a higher degree of recognition. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with tiled skews, half-round plastic gutters with downpipes on the gables, and boarded eaves. The front facade, facing north towards the road, was originally symmetrical but has since been modified, with some openings infilled. The ground floor has five openings. The leftmost is a window opening, now infilled. The second is a modern pedestrian door. The central opening is a large doorway with a flat head and roller shutter, which appears to have been widened on its left side; a window once stood there but it has been completely infilled and rendered over. A segmental-headed doorway, also infilled, sits to the right of the main entrance, alongside another infilled window opening. All these ground floor openings have rendered surrounds without cills, aside from a concrete cill on the left. The first floor features three 1/1 top-hung uPVC windows flanking an infilled and rendered over central loading door. Granite cills are present on all first-floor windows. The second floor openings mirror those below, but are reduced in height. The original gablet above the central doorway has been removed and the resulting space has been slated over, with an electric light projecting from the right end of the head. The left and right gables are blank. The rear elevation is smooth cement rendered and has an advanced rendered eaves course. This rear elevation contains two small ground floor window openings - one infilled, the other containing a 1/1 top-hung window. Two original window openings, now infilled, are located on the first floor, alongside a modern opening containing a 1/1 top-hung window. The second floor also has two original, infilled, window openings that align with the lower floors.
