Description

Sewer ventilation pipe on Mossvale Road, Dromore, erected around 1906. The pipe consists of a tall, slim cast-iron riser extending to approximately 9 metres, supported on a decorative cylindrical base with fluted and banded detailing in the manner of period streetlamps. The base is slightly battered and features a mildly ornamental design. The riser comprises two metal sections joined by an intermediate cast-iron collar, and is topped with a cast-iron crown. A maker's plate screwed to the east side of the base at ground level identifies the manufacturer as W E Farrer Ltd of Birmingham. The entire pipe—riser, base, collar, and crown—remains unpainted in bare metal, exhibiting surface corrosion throughout.

The pipe is positioned on the pavement on the south side of Mossvale Road, approximately 600 metres due east of the town centre. The surrounding area lies in a valley between two ridges that slopes gently to the west, now surrounded by modern educational and residential development, though a long residential terrace shown on the Ordnance Survey 4th edition map opposite the pipe's position remains extant.

This is a sewer ventilation pipe designed to disperse noxious gases from underground sewers at height, preventing odours at street level. Such pipes, commonly known as stink or stench pipes, were widely adopted in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods following the example set by London in the wake of the Great Stink of 1858. They were modelled on designs devised for the London sewers by engineer Goldsworthy Gurney (1793–1875) and were typically constructed in cast-iron to resemble lamp posts. Some, particularly those on hilltops where gas could accumulate, were topped with actual lamp fittings in which gases could be burnt off. These pipes gradually became obsolete as individual house ventilation improved and sewage disposal advanced, leading many to be cut down to stumps or removed entirely.

W E Farrer Ltd of Birmingham was established in 1896 and became noted for sewage purification products, confirming installation of this pipe after that date. A March 1906 newspaper report of a Dromore Urban Council meeting references discussions of proposed improvements in nearby Moss Lane and Mount Street involving installation of ventilation pipes. A pipe in Mount Street was in place by July 1906, with another planned for Rampart Street by summer 1908, suggesting this example dates from approximately that period.

This is believed to be one of only two intact examples of such pipes surviving in Northern Ireland, making it rare and worthy of preservation. It is of industrial archaeological interest and retains its authentic bare metal condition with visible surface corrosion.
