Description

Drumconwell Cottage is a single-storey house located a short distance south of a secondary road connecting Armagh to Keady and Newtownhamilton, approximately three miles south of Armagh. The building dates from the early 19th century, though it may be considerably older. The front elevation, which faces west, is gabled to the road.

The walls are constructed of whitened stone or clay. The roof is predominantly finished with corrugated iron and iron ridge sheeting, though the northern section retains natural slate with a blue clay ridge, representing the building's thatch-under-tin construction type. This places it among a small number of surviving thatched buildings or those with thatch under tin in the region.

Two chimneystacks with corbel coursing rise from the building, one serving the kitchen hearth and the other the parlour fireplace; both retain remains of roughcast finish. Various gutter brackets of different types remain in place, with a section of metal gutter at ground level to the rear.

The entrance is formed by a ledged and sheeted door protected by a windbreak porch, whose roof extends from the main corrugated iron covering. To the right of the entrance is a small blocked window opening, a larger blocked window opening, a timber-sheeted door, an open shed, and an entrance blocked by timber spars. Two timber-sheeted doors are located to the left of the entrance. Both gables are without openings.

The rear elevation contains multiple window openings in various states of preservation, including blocked openings with frames showing vertically sliding timber-framed windows with curved sash stops, one with a larger upper half divided into two vertical panes and a plain bottom section, another with plain sashes, and a 6/3 vertically sliding timber-framed window. Four small rectangular openings and a circular opening provide ventilation to the open shed. Panels of clay walling are exposed at the rear.

The property appears on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map but is not recorded in contemporary valuation records. It appears in the second valuation (1862), where Henry L. Prentice leased the property to Ann Neill with a rateable value of £1-10-0. The listing extends to the house, outbuildings, and shed.
