Description
Glendara, also known as Hartford Cottage, is a house built in 1876-77 for Miss Dorcas Boyd. While the architect is unconfirmed, the Ruskinian Gothic style and distinctive herringbone and chequered brick detailing closely resemble the Masonic Hall of 1884, designed by local architect John Henry Fullerton. The house was initially called ‘The Cottage’ and later ‘Hartford Cottage’. A succession of occupants included James McFarlane around 1889, Joseph Murphy circa 1896, Elizabeth Cowan circa 1910, Jane Girvan circa 1918, Margaret Erskine circa 1923, Eleanor Mackin circa 1924, and James Murphy by 1929. William Orr resided there in early 1932, followed by William Strain in 1947. The property was marketed for sale in 1956 and was occupied by Mr. Rainey in mid-1975, at which point it became known as Glendara. The building is located within the Armagh conservation area and is currently owned by the Orange Order.
