Flax mill, Behind 6 Caughey's Rd, Dromore, Co Down, BT25 1DS

This is an early twentieth-century, single-storey flax scutching mill and associated stores, located a short distance to the west of a former, separately recorded flax mill complex across Caughey’s Road. The building is aligned north-south with small, single-storey returns on each side, and it is one of only a few water-powered flax scutching mills in Ulster still capable of working, currently used for demonstration purposes.

The building's architecture is characterised by pitched corrugated metal roofs, plastic rainwater goods where present, walls constructed of corrugated metal and cement-rendered concrete blockwork, and square-headed window openings with metal frames. The mill is surrounded by fields on all sides.

It was not shown on the 1919 Ordnance Survey map. Although a flax mill is mentioned in the 1935 Valuation book, this likely refers to the mill on the opposite side of Caughey's Road. It probably dates to the 1940s, a period of increased scutching activity during World War Two, and was operated by Felix McConville and later by his son Richard until the end of the war. The mill appears on the 1974 Ordnance Survey map. It was restored to working order for demonstration purposes in 1983 and remains in operation. While of significant technical interest in demonstrating the flax scutching process, the building is not of special architectural or historic interest due to various modern additions and alterations.
