Description

This is a rotary water pump, likely dating from between 1920 and 1939. It is of industrial archaeological interest. The pump features a plain, undecorated column composed of three bolted sections, with a flywheel on either side of the axle. Embossed around the top of the column is the inscription "H.J.Godwin Ltd/Ovenington/Glos/England". Originally used to pump water into a cistern within the school, it was probably installed when the school opened in 1939 and superseded by mains water in the 1950s or 1960s. The pump has been relocated from its original position within the school grounds to a prominent position in front of the new school building. Further details are contained in the EHS Report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: a Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond, January 1997.
