Description
Tullylish Bridge, built around 1818, is a single-span masonry arch road bridge carrying a minor road over the River Bann. It is of interest due to the use of dressed stonework in the abutments and voussoirs, which is unusual for early 19th-century bridges, as rubble masonry was more typical. The bridge’s single wide span is also notable, being more characteristic of mid-19th century and later constructions. The bridge sits on the site of an earlier bridge built in the early 1600s, reflecting the development of infrastructure in the district.
The abutments are founded directly on bedrock and are constructed of large dressed granite blocks laid in regular courses. The rest of the bridge is built of random rubble blackstone, including the arch soffit. The segmental arch is embellished with dressed granite voussoirs, featuring a slightly raised keystone. The parapets terminate in square piers, some of granite, and are coped with flat, dressed granite blocks that project slightly over the bridge's outer faces. The deck is slightly curved and accommodates a 1½-lane road and a footpath on the western side.
An uncaptioned bridge appears on the 1833 Ordnance Survey map, and the 1834 Ordnance Survey Memoir states the bridge was erected in 1818 at a cost of £475 to the county. It was documented as Tullylish Bridge on the 1860 Ordnance Survey map and subsequent editions. The bridge is located within a semi-rural landscape and is flanked by two-storey terrace dwellings to the northeast, a bungalow to the northwest, and a church hall and former Sexton’s House to the south, alongside All Saint's Parish Church to the southwest. The bridge is of both local and industrial archaeological interest.
