Description
A pre-1830s single-storey vernacular dwelling of hearth-lobby plan, situated on an elevated rural site north of Glenloughan Road and accessed directly from Drummiller Lane, approximately 1.1km north-east of Scarva. The house occupies the north end of its site, with ruinous block-built outbuildings lying to the south and a paddock beyond.
The dwelling is constructed of rubble stone with sand and cement dry dash render applied to all elevations. The south elevation has three single-glazed windows with steel frame casements, while the north elevation has two single-glazed timber sliding sash windows. The east gable contains two windows at high level either side of a chimney breast, appearing to be timber sliding sash. A low wing wall with matching render extends south from the south-east corner. The roof is covered with corrugated iron sheeting with matching ridge. The building originally comprised three rooms with attic accommodation, though the roof over one section has partially collapsed. A single chimney remains extant, though heavily overgrown. All elevations are substantially overgrown, and the remains of thatch that once covered the roof are no longer in place, having collapsed to the ground. The structure is dilapidated with insufficient original historic fabric and detailing remaining to meet the criteria for listing.
Ordnance Survey mapping from 1835 shows a building of similar size and plan at this location. Evidence from the second valuation of circa 1861 suggests the property may have been divided into two dwellings at that time. The smaller western property, occupied by Roddy Magee, had become ruins by 1901. The eastern dwelling was occupied by William White, a farmer aged 72, living with his unmarried daughter Susanna in what was recorded as a second-class thatched dwelling with two windows in front and three rooms. The property subsequently passed to Joseph White around 1910 and to his freehold ownership from 1922. It was later acquired by William Wootton in 1956, then Margaret Wootton in 1958, and Dominic Small by 1964, who remained in residence until 1972. The building appears to have been abandoned in the late 1970s or 1980s.
