Description
The site formerly contained a small schoolhouse and schoolmaster’s residence, built between 1881 and 1882 in the village of Moyraverty, near Craigavon, County Armagh. Both buildings were demolished after 1972.
The schoolhouse was a single-storey building with a slated gable roof facing the road. It featured a gabled porch on the left corner with plain bargeboards. The walls were constructed of black coursed rubble with brick quoins and dressings around the openings. Two drop-hung sash windows, lacking glass, were set within a flat-arched front gable, punctuated by a cement band inscribed “Moyraverty National School”. The entrance was located within the porch, also with a flat arch, and the door had been smashed. The front gable was approximately 24 feet wide, and the building was in poor, derelict condition according to a 1972 survey.
The schoolmaster’s residence, situated to the left of the schoolhouse, was a single-storey building with gable ends. The slated roof had been lost, and a brick chimney remained. It was constructed of blackstone rubble with brick quoins and dressings to the openings. A front-projecting gabled porch with a slated roof and a window without glass was present, along with a doorway on the right side where the door was missing. One window on the main front also lacked sash windows and featured a flat arch. The building was described as ruinous, with only the shell remaining, and measured approximately 26 feet across the front. A hoop wrought-iron fence stood along the front of both buildings, set on a cracked cemented wall.
The buildings first appeared in valuation records in 1882, indicating construction in that year or the preceding one. They were built by the local Presbyterian congregation, with the cost of either the school or both buildings being £250. They are shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1905-07, labelled "Moyraverty School." The school likely closed before 1964, possibly in the late 1940s, coinciding with postwar education reforms. Both buildings were abandoned well before 1972 and were completely demolished sometime after that date.
