Description
A pair of two storey terrace houses of probable pre-1834 origin, situated at the south-west end of a terrace on the north-west side of High Street, to the west of Comber town centre.
Originally vernacular in character with fieldstone rubble walls, both properties are now greatly altered. The facades are finished in Tyrolean render and painted. Both have gabled roofs covered in natural slates with brick chimney stacks and rendered parapets. PVC rainwater goods have been installed throughout.
Number 35 (to the north-east) has a modern panelled and glazed door to the left of its ground floor, with an enlarged window opening to the right fitted with a PVC frame. Two smaller windows are positioned to the first floor. At the rear, to the right of the main facade, there is a large full-height modern flat roof extension with modern windows and a door. The main rear facade to the left of this extension contains an enlarged ground floor window and a smaller first floor window. The rendered parapet faces north-east.
Number 37 has a modern panelled and glazed door to the right of its ground floor, with an enlarged window fitted with a PVC frame to the left. Another enlarged window is positioned to the first floor, though an original window to the right of this has been blocked up. At the rear, to the left of the main facade, there is a large full-height modern flat roof extension with modern windows and a door. The main rear facade to the right of the extension contains small windows to each floor. The rendered parapet faces south-west.
Historical records indicate this site was occupied in 1722. An 1834 valuation records that this section of High Street (then known as Cow Lane) contained 23 houses of exempt status, meaning they fell below rateable value. These two properties likely belonged to this group and probably date from the late 18th or very early 19th century. The front windows to both properties were enlarged in the early 1970s. Large modern flat roof returns have been added to the rear of both houses.
