The Cottage, Fort Road, Helen’s Bay, Co Down

The Cottage, formerly located on Fort Road, Helen’s Bay, County Down, was a long, single-story cottage that appeared on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834. The original cottage has since been demolished and replaced by a two-story dwelling. The First Survey card describes the cottage as having a corrugated iron roof, rendered chimneys, and whitewashed stone rubble walls. It featured four diamond-pane windows with Georgian panes and a porch, followed by another diamond-pane window with horizontal astrays. The porch was described as recently built, square in design, and having a six-pane window on its front face and a sheeted door on its left-hand side. The house had been extended to the right-hand side as a store, with a wisteria-covered wall. Behind the cottage stood an outbuilding with a slated roof and ruinous stone rubble walls. The front of the original block measured approximately 118 feet. The condition of the house was reported as fair to poor in a 1973 survey.
