Description

A substantial single storey hipped roof house located on the south side of Ballyfounder Road, roughly half a mile south-east of Portaferry. Locally said to have been built in 1876, though it may represent a remodelling of a pre-1834 dwelling, as a building of similar size is indicated on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1860.

The building is roughly U-shaped in plan with prominent chimney stacks and large returns to the rear. The front elevation faces roughly north and is symmetrical, consisting of the main section of the house forming the base of the U-shape, with a central projecting porch featuring a hipped roof. The entrance is located on the west face of the porch and comprises a panelled door set with a chamfered reveal. To the north and east faces of the porch is a window with modern timber frame. To each side of the porch on the main facade are two similar windows, all with stone cills. A conservatory has been recently added to the far left of the east elevation, whilst the main building has two windows similar to those on the front elevation.

The south (rear) elevation is made up of the gables of the two returns forming the uprights of the U-shape, and the rear of the main building between them. The gable to the western return is hipped with a narrow flush lean-to extension to its right, and has four unevenly spaced openings comprising two timber windows similar to the front elevation and two doors, one glazed and one panelled. The side of this return has one single pane PVC casement window. The eastern return, which finishes on a gable, has a roughly semi-circular PVC conservatory attached, with a single two pane PVC casement window on its side. Between both returns, the rear of the main building has two two-pane PVC windows with top hung upper panes. The west facade of the main building has two windows similar to those on the front.

The main roof is hipped and covered in asbestos slates with clay ridge tiles. There are three chimney stacks in the centre of the main building and one on each of the returns. The stacks are relatively tall, finished in plain render with decorative corbelling, and have one decorative pot on all stacks, with two on the eastern return stack. PVC gutters and down spouts are fitted throughout. Wrought iron garden gates mark the entrance. Adjacent outhouses were originally used as offices for local clergy.

The house originally served as the Parochial House for St. Patrick's Catholic Church and is believed to have been built by Reverend James Killen in 1876. However, a new parochial house was built closer to the church itself in 1958. The building has undergone recent renovation including modern timber windows to the front and conservatories and PVC windows to the rear.
