Description
A long, single storey gabled block containing two dwellings, built probably in 1813 and situated on the north side of Saintfield Road, less than one mile west of Killinchy.
Number 21 occupies the east side of the block. The front south facade is finished in rough cast and painted. It features a timber sheeted door to the right, with a sash window (with horizontal astragals) to the right of the door. To the left of the door, widely spaced, are two similar sash windows. The very top of the facade has been re-rendered, covering the line where the thatch edge previously sat. The east gable is blank and appears to have been recently re-rendered in rough cast. The rear facade is partly covered in greenery and is whitewashed. It contains a timber sheeted door to the far left, a square four-pane window to the right of this, and a smaller casement window further right. The very top of the rear facade has also been rendered.
Number 23 is considerably smaller than its neighbour. The front facade is finished in rough cast and painted and features a small gabled porch to the right, which is mainly glazed with a timber sheeted door and felt-covered roof. To the left of the porch are two sash windows. The west gable now has a large timber lean-to shed attached. The rear has two sash windows, with the right-hand window being larger. The rear facade is mainly unrendered and painted.
The entire block has a gabled roof covered in corrugated iron, which replaced the original thatch in recent years. Two rendered chimney stacks are visible. PVC rainwater goods are present.
A 1974 survey noted an inscribed stone on the east gable reading "Built by James Orley A.D. 1813", though this stone is not now readily apparent—it may have been rendered over or covered by ivy. Documentary evidence suggests the name was more likely "Oprey" or "O'Prey" rather than "Orley". The block is shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1859–60. Valuation records from around 1861 record that the properties were then in the possession of a James Oprey.
