Description

This is an early two-storey terrace house, likely dating to the mid to late 18th century. It holds local historical and social significance and is situated on the south side of Bow Street, northeast of Donaghadee town centre.

The front, north facade features a centrally placed panelled door with a simple fanlight above. To the right of the door is a large elliptical arched carriage entrance, constructed with voussoirs ("in and out") and fitted with timber double doors. A sash window sits to the left of the doorway. Above these, on the first floor, are four evenly spaced sash windows containing Georgian panes. The facade is rendered with a lined finish, and chamfered quoins are present on the east side only. A large, relatively modern, single-storey extension dominates the rear of the property, with a mono-pitched roof covered in pan tiles and a simple timber-sheeted door and window facing west. The rear facade of the main house is simply rendered. The original roof is gabled and unfortunately now covered in pan tiles. Two rendered chimney stacks are visible. The rainwater goods are cast iron at the front and PVC at the rear.

Houses on this site are depicted on a map of Donaghadee prepared for Daniel De la Cherois around 1780 and are also shown on Ordnance Survey maps from the 1800s. Deeds relating to the property date back to 1770. Valuation records from around 1836 indicate that the property was then occupied by a Robert Grey and had a rateable value of £3-8-0.

The building's architectural interest lies in its style, proportions, ornamentation and plan form and, despite subsequent alterations, the quality and survival of some internal features. The property is situated within a conservation area.
