Description
A simple two-storey vernacular house of the 1860s, set in the shaded area on the north side of Kearney Village, approximately three miles east of Portaferry. The building is listed for its architectural interest and local historical significance, including its group value within the village conservation area.
The front (north) façade is asymmetrical, with a timber panel door positioned right of centre, flanked by sash windows. Three similar sash windows, unevenly spaced, occupy the first floor, all with smooth cement surrounds. A large timber garage door is set flush with the left side of the north elevation. The east gable displays two first-floor windows of the same type, with a garage extension featuring a mono-pitch corrugated iron roof and a single fixed-light window to its east elevation. The west gable also has two first-floor windows, together with a slightly taller window to the right of the ground floor. The gable displays a crude chamfered plinth. A lean-to extension is attached flush to the west gable at the rear, containing a window of the same type. Behind this, a hipped-roof section projects to the south, fitted with a window to the left and a small timber conservatory on the east elevation. The main house ground floor, to the right of the extension, contains a window of the same type, with a smaller similar window in the centre of the first floor and a small two-pane window to its left.
The main roof is gabled and pitched, covered in Bangor blue slates with stone parapets and two yellow-brick chimney stacks. The entire house is finished in rough-cast render with chamfered quoins to the front and gables. Cast-iron gutters and downspouts are fitted throughout. A low rendered wall encloses the front garden.
Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1860 show a large L-shaped building on this site, suggesting the present dwelling dates from sometime after 1860. The house forms part of Kearney Village, which was restored and reconstructed from 1965 onwards by the National Trust based on the 1834 map layout, when the settlement had reached its peak extent.
