Description

This is a single-storey shop, originally built [?c.1900-1910] as a bakery, and situated on the west side of Prospect Road, Bangor. The building measures approximately 21.6 metres by 9 metres, with its elevations exposed to the south and east, and it is adjoined by other buildings to the west and north. The exterior is roughcast rendered, with a smooth render base. Large window openings, now with modern frames, are visible on both exposed elevations. On the long east elevation is a large, modern vehicle opening with a roller shutter, alongside a glazed pedestrian entrance. Modern signage is present on the east elevation. The curved Belfast truss roof is clad in painted corrugated metal, extending to the eaves and the gable area on the south elevation.

The Belfast truss roof structure, developed in the mid-19th century to provide efficient, lightweight, and long-span roofing, is a notable feature. The first known reference to this type of curved wooden roof structure supported by bowstring girders appeared in 1866, from the Belfast firm of felt-makers, McTear & Co. McTear’s continued production until 1908, and were followed by Anderson & Co., who produced trusses from 1886, launching a Mark II version in 1896 which prioritized long spans and reduced weight. The term "Belfast truss" is commonly applied to all timber bowstring trusses where the internal bracing members meet on the top curved member. Map evidence confirms the building’s construction after 1901. While the building has no specific listing status, it is considered to have industrial archaeological interest as part of a survey of Belfast roof trusses.
