Description

‘Ashdene’ is a mainly two-storey farmhouse, likely of part pre-1834 construction, though probably raised to its present height in the mid to later 1800s. It is located on a slight rise to the south of the Newtownards Road, approximately two and a half miles west of Donaghadee. The property has a modern glazed porch and modern window frames.

The front elevation faces roughly northwest and is asymmetrical, mainly two-storey, with a small single-storey section to the southwest. A modern, mainly glazed porch is centrally positioned, obscuring the original doorway, which now has a modern glazed door and a mid-19th century style surround with pilasters, frieze, and cornice. To the left of the porch are two windows with modern frames. To the right is a single similar window, with two more slightly narrower windows to the right of this, within the single-storey section. Four evenly spaced windows are located on the first floor, mirroring the ground floor arrangement. Both gables are blank. The single-storey section merges with a single-storey outbuilding to the southwest.

The rear façade features a mainly glazed door to the left, with a square window with a modern frame adjacent. A smaller window with a modern frame is situated to the left of this, and two windows, similar to those on the far left, are located to the right of the doorway. Two windows are present on the first floor, mirroring the first floor front. The façade is finished with a dry dash render. The gabled roof is slated, with two rendered chimney stacks to the gables. Mainly cast iron rainwater goods are present.

An Ordnance Survey map of 1834 depicts a building corresponding to the present plan. This building was not recorded in a valuation of approximately 1836 due to its low rateable value, suggesting it may have been single-storey at that time. A valuation from approximately 1861-63 shows the property in the ownership of James Hanna, with a rateable value of £6-10-0, which implies that the building may have been raised to two storeys by this point.
