Description
Gate Lodge, Glenganagh
This two-bay single-storey gate lodge with undercroft stands at the entrance to Glenganagh off the Bangor Road in Groomsport. Built around 1880–1882, it was designed by the architect James Hanna as part of extensive improvements to the Glenganagh estate undertaken by Samuel Kingan in the early 1880s, which significantly increased the property's value.
The lodge is square-plan with a small kitchen extension to the west. It has a hipped natural Tullycavy slate roof with leaded hips and a central chimneystack with sandstone coping. Cast-iron gutters and downpipes sit on overhanging sandstone eaves supported by corbel blocks. The walls are painted roughcast with diagonal buttresses to the principal corners; these buttresses have ashlar sandstone coping that rises to eaves level.
The principal south elevation faces the entrance and contains three openings. The centrepiece is a glazed and timber entrance door accessed by a step, framed with a sandstone Doric portico supported on pedestals with a plain entablature. The windows are 3/6 replacement timber sliding sashes with stone sills. The west elevation, partially abutted by the kitchen extension, has a single exposed window. The rear north elevation is double-height, with a garage door and pedestrian door at ground floor level and two timber-framed windows serving upper accommodation. The east elevation features a timber casement oriel window to the right side and a timber access door to the undercroft.
The gatescreen stands directly south of the lodge. It comprises a vehicular entrance with square-plan sandstone ashlar piers having plinth, cornice and ball finials supporting a pair of early twentieth-century steel vehicular gates. To the right is a matching pedestrian gate supported by a smaller pier with a simple shallow pyramid cap. The flanking walls, curved on plan, are uncoursed squared rock-faced sandstone with dressed segmental sandstone coping. The gatescreen was probably designed at the same time as the lodge around 1882 as part of Samuel Kingan's improvements to the estate.
The lodge and gatescreen together form an important part of the Glenganagh estate group. The site is set at the south end of extensive grounds comprising woodlands and gardens, opening westward onto Ballyholme beach.
Cartographic evidence indicates that a gatehouse existed on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 at the top of a short drive to Glenganagh. This building had disappeared by the second edition (1858), when the road line had changed and a new gate lodge was shown further south on the new road alignment. This earlier lodge does not appear in Griffith's Valuation (1856–64). The current building replaced that earlier lodge around 1882, when a gate lodge is first mentioned in the description of Glenganagh house itself. The rebuilding likely formed part of Samuel Kingan's broader improvement scheme for the property.
