Description
A block of three identical two and a half storey terrace houses built in 1902, set on the north-west slope of High Street. The houses were constructed by a local general merchant and developer named Ritchie on a site previously occupied by four single storey dwellings.
The front façade is executed in red brick with yellow brick dressings and features gabled dormers. Each property shares the same design: a ground floor doorway with chamfered reveal and yellow brick dressings with keystone, flanked to the left by a pair of segmental-headed windows. First floor windows are similarly headed and set slightly further apart, positioned on a yellow brick cill course with a decorative hound's tooth course at window head level. Yellow brick eases courses mark the upper storeys, with a yellow brick eaves course to the roof overhang. The natural slated gabled roof features a gabled dormer to the front.
Numbers 23 and 25 retain traditional panelled doors, while No. 21 has a recent replacement. The dormers to Nos. 23 and 25 have vertical hung red clay tiles to their sides with decorative red clay ridge tiles, whereas No. 21's dormer has vertical hung Bangor blue slates. The exposed gable sections at each end of the block are blank.
All original window frames have been replaced with PVC. The exposed sections of the gables to each end of the block are blank.
To the rear of each property is a two storey return set on the squint. No. 21's return is gabled with a sash window to the first floor of the gable end and is largely obscured. No. 25's return is particularly well-preserved, finished in brick with a natural slated gabled roof and retaining original sash window frames except to the ground floor of the main rear façade. No. 23's return has a flat roof and modern lean-to shed. The rear façades are finished in either plain render or limestone chip render with PVC windows throughout, apart from original sashes to No. 25.
Each house has a tall yellow brick chimney with corbelling to the north-east side, a Velux window to the rear slope of the roof, and a mixture of cast iron and PVC rainwater goods.
