Description
A detached, five-bay, single-storey lodge was built around 1870 within the grounds of Thornfield School, located south of Jordanstown Road. The building is rectangular in plan and incorporates a small entrance porch to the east. The roof is hipped, originally clad in natural slate with a rolled leaded ridge, though the lead has been removed and only batons remain; it features exposed rafter ends to deep, overhanging eaves, along with a single yellow brick chimney with a replacement pot and two red brick chimneys. The walls are constructed of Flemish bonded red brick. The windows, now blocked, were originally camber-headed and featured brick voussoirs and painted stepped surrounds, with painted masonry sills. The principal, east-facing elevation has a gabled porch with ornate timber bargeboards and a drop finial abutting the second bay from the left; this porch features an elliptical-headed entrance opening containing a square-headed entrance door, which is now partially blocked. Exposed bays to the left and right each contain a pair of windows. The south, west, and north elevations are blank. The lodge is situated within the grounds of Thornfield School, with the rear elevation bordering the west boundary fence and a residential dwelling beyond. Mature trees and vegetation define the immediate surroundings, with a school playing field to the east. The building first appears on the 1901-1902 OS map. Records suggest the lodge may originally have been in the curtilage of ‘Rostulla’, which was recorded as having a house, office, gate lodge, and land and was occupied by Samuel Gelston, leased from William B. Lyons. It is also possible the lodge originally belonged to ‘Thornfield’. Its total valuation was £100.
