Description

This is a three-storey, two-bay gabled building on High Street, Antrim, likely dating from the early 19th century, probably between 1820 and 1839. A building appears on the site on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832. Despite later alterations to both the exterior and interior, the building retains architectural and historic interest, notably its group value when viewed alongside the two adjacent buildings.

The main north-facing elevation features a pitched roof covered in regular courses of Bangor blue slates, with a red brick chimney on the left-hand gable. The upper floors are finished with smooth cement render, painted. Rectangular timber sliding sash windows, with 8 panes in the upper sashes and 8 panes in the lower sashes, without horns, are set in plain reveals, with exposed sash boxes, two windows to each upper floor. The ground floor is also smooth cement render, lined with a modern timber shop front. To the left is a large shop window and doorway flanked by panelled timber pilasters, and to the right a recessed doorway, also between similar pilasters. The right-hand door, numbered 35, is rectangular timber panelled, topped with a rectangular fanlight, within timber panelled reveals. A projecting timber frieze bearing the shop name runs across the ground floor shop front.

The rear elevation is four storeys high, with two bays. The main block has a roof of Bangor blue slates and a chimney on the right-hand gable constructed of rustic, yellow, and red brick. The rear wall is rendered with a “wet dash” finish. A single window is a rectangular timber sliding sash, with 3 panes in the upper sash and 3 in the lower, without horns, with an exposed sash box. To the right is a later three-storey high rear return, clad in synthetic slates with wooden eaves boards and with what appears to be damaged PVC gutters and downpipes. Windows on the return are rectangular PVC fixed lights with top-hung vents. A two-storey gabled projection extends south from the rear return, and a bay with a lean-to roof, containing a modern roof light, and a doorway with a rectangular timber door incorporating metal mesh panels, projects to the west.

The rear yard is concreted and enclosed by modern steel boundary railings. The yard opens onto the adjacent properties to the west. The building is situated within a terrace of houses and shops fronting the main street and is located within a conservation area.
