Description

This is a modern Presbyterian church of unusual centralised octagonal plan, built between 1971 and 1972 with extensions to the halls added in 1983. It was designed by McCutcheon and Wilkinson, architects of Ballymena, and constructed to be a “maintenance free building in the modern idiom at minimum cost while retaining the Presbyterian simplicity and dignity.”

The church is built of concrete brickwork and is connected to a flat-roofed hall on the west side. The main entrance, facing north, features a pair of rectangular, double doors with raised and fielded panels set within a moulded concrete block surround with exposed aggregate. Windows are located in the projecting rectangular bays on each side and consist of full-height plate glass units within bronze-coloured PVC frames, featuring etched designs and inscriptions, and fitted with steel security grilles. Moulded PVC gutters and downpipes are present. The roof is metal sheeted with an octagonal glazed lantern of spire-like form, topped with a plain finial. A single-storey link block and taller, flat-roofed hall are attached to the west, featuring plain concrete brickwork, steel shutter doors, and rectangular windows with bronzed PVC frames, some set within recessed panels with smooth cement rendering. A later single-storey link block and hall extend to the rear, also of plain concrete brickwork, with a mansard roof of synthetic slates and similar rectangular windows with splayed concrete cills.

The church is situated facing the main road, set back from it with grassed areas in front. Light brown concrete brick paving leads from the public pavement to the main entrance and around the building's sides, complemented by mature trees within the grassed areas. The building is located at the entrance to a modern housing estate.
