Description

Ballylinney Presbyterian Church is a detached double-height single-cell rectangular church dated 1835, located to the north of Ballylinney Road at its junction with Lisnalinchy Road. The building exemplifies a simply detailed rural Presbyterian church typical of County Antrim.

The church was erected following a series of committee meetings in 1834, after permission was granted by Templepatrick Presbytery. The foundation stone was laid on 6 May 1835 by James Owens of Holestone, with the meeting house opened by Rev Dr Henry Cooke on 11 September 1836. Thomas Gregg granted half an acre of land free of rent and contributed £10 towards construction. The first minister was Rev. Isaac Adams, who served until 1880. Seating was added in 1837 and the gallery in 1857. The church became part of Carrickfergus Presbytery in 1840. An organ was installed in 1923, and heating and lighting in 1956.

The pitched slate roof has modern timber bargeboards. Walls are pebbledashed over a smooth rendered plinth. The principal elevation faces south and is gable-ended, abutted by a gable-ended single-storey porch to centre. This elevation displays a sound-arched-headed window to either side of the porch, each with moulded surround, and a datestone to the apex reading 'Erected 1835, 1st minister Rev. Isaac Adams…'. The west and east elevations are five windows wide, with windows to ground and upper floor levels, containing leaded stained glass with painted masonry sills. Windows are square-headed unless otherwise stated. The porch contains a modern square-headed double-leaf timber panelled entrance door surmounted by a rectangular fanlight, accessed by three concrete steps.

The church has a single-storey porch to the south and a modern two-storey house attached to the north, containing a minister's room and caretaker's accommodation. The gallery is retained to three sides internally. Stained glass dates from the mid twentieth century, and original windows with moulded surrounds to the principal elevation have been retained. Rainwater goods are uPVC.

The church is set in a rural location within a churchyard, bounded to the north and south by pebbledashed walling. A modern hall to the west was added in 1976 and renovated in 1997; earlier stables to the west were converted in 1966. The graveyard lies to the east and south. The earliest stone found is dated 1840. Square pillars forming an alcoved entrance support modern steel gates to the north and south of the church, and the south of the hall. The church appeared as a rectangular footprint on the first edition Ordnance Survey Map of 1833. The Townland Valuation of 1836 records a meeting house, sexton's house and grave house on the site. Griffiths Valuation book of 1859 records a Presbyterian meeting house under lease to Thomas Gregg Esq.
