Description
These are a pair of single-storey terraced houses located at 18-20 Shane’s Street, Randalstown, Antrim. The buildings were originally three separate cottages, but numbers 19 and 20 have now been combined into a single dwelling. They appear on an Ordnance Survey map of 1829, suggesting a construction date between 1820 and 1839.
The main entrances face south. The entrance elevation of number 18 features rendered walls with a dry dash finish, a Bangor blue slate roof in regular courses, a later flat-roofed dormer with smooth rendered front and cheeks, a later rustic brick chimney, PVC guttering and downpipes, a timber fascia to the dormer, and a later flat-roofed timber entrance porch with a timber fascia. This house has modern rectangular timber windows with top-hung vents. Number 19, which incorporates the original number 20, is similarly styled, though without the porch or dormer. The end gable is plain. Both rear elevations are of modernised character and feature similar materials.
The houses stand within a terrace in the built-up area of the town, facing the main road and set back slightly with small front gardens bounded by smooth rendered garden walls. Originally, the terrace comprised three single-storey cottages connected to a two-storey brick and rendered terrace. Number 18 had a double-fronted appearance with windows on either side of the entrance, while number 19 had a single window. The original construction utilized blackstone rubble with flat brick arches over doors and windows, with the façade of number 18 subsequently rendered. The windows were originally double-hung with full glazing bars set in wide sash boxes, and the doors were sheeted. The roofs were originally slated and featured brick chimneys.
The buildings were joined together in 1994. They are located within a conservation area.
