Description
No. 1, St Andrew Street is a historic house located at the end of a row, formerly part of No. 1, Vicars' Close. It dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, with some later additions. The building is constructed from rubble or coursed and squared rubble, featuring Doulting ashlar dressings and pantile roofs.
The street front showcases a central gable flanked by wings that are set flush. The left wing has a parapet and is shorter than the right wing, which has a plain eaves roof and a return gable end. The house is two storeys high, with windows that are mainly double-chamfer stone-mullioned casements, complete with stopped drip courses.
The central gable features a fine canted oriel with a crenellated parapet under a swept cresting adorned with fleur-de-lys, flanked by small slit openings. To the left of the gable is a small cusped light. On the ground floor, there is a 2-light casement and a 19th-century door set in a 4-centred opening with a stopped drip. Each wing contains a 2-light casement on each floor, and the right wing has a small stair light immediately to the right of the main gable.
The main gable is topped with raised coping that continues as a parapet to the left, and features an octagonal chimney shaft with crenellated capping. The return gable to the right is also coped, above plain rubble walling, but includes central flush brick flues that are cut back below the ridge.
The interior has not been inspected, but it is likely to retain early structure and detail since the house was originally part of No. 1, Vicars' Close, which has a blocked doorway to the party wall at ground floor level. This building is part of an outstanding planned terrace group from the medieval period.
