Description
Nos 4 to 12 on Park Street are a pair of buildings likely started soon after April 1793, when James Audus the elder, a notable local shipowner, leased the site from the 9th Lord Petre. He demolished the Abbey Gatehouse as part of his development of The Crescent, which Park Street complements. An alternative date for the buildings is around 1832, when Park Street became the start of the Bawtry Turnpike, previously running from New Lane.
The buildings are constructed of brown brick and feature a pitched slate roof. They are two storeys high with a parapet and a continuous first floor sill. Each building has three bays with sash windows that include glazing bars and rusticated stucco voussoirs. The doors have fielded panels, panelled reveals, and semi-circular fanlights, with wooden surrounds that include panelled pilasters and consoles above the impost level leading to plain cornices on Nos 6 and 8. Nos 4 and 12 have modillioned pediments, while No 10 features a flat hood on scrolled brackets with drop finials and a mid-19th century ground floor bay.
