Rustic Bridge Over River Skell Approximately 700 Metres South-East Of The Outlet From The Lake, With Ford Approximately 4 Metres To South

The Rustic Bridge over the River Skell, located approximately 700 metres south-east of the outlet from the Lake and with a ford about 4 metres to the south, is a notable structure. The ford dates back to around 1740 and was created for John Aislabie, while the bridge was likely built before 1781 for William Aislabie. The ford features gritstone setts bordered by curbstones and is approximately 3 metres wide.

The bridge itself is constructed from gritstone rubble and boulders, incorporating tufa blocks. It has a single-span shallow segmental arch with dressed rubble voussoirs. The parapet is made of rubble, and large boulders are used at the terminals. The stones are mortared but arranged to resemble dry walling. This bridge carries a narrow bridle or pedestrian pathway and replaced an earlier structure built around 1740 in a Chinese Chippendale style, which provided access to the pagoda in the Chinese Wood to the east, now demolished.
