Description
Richmond Bridge is a Grade II* listed bridge located in Hipswell Sleegill, dated 1788-1789 and designed by John Carr of York. It is constructed from ashlar sandstone and features three segmental arches with voussoirs and hoodmoulds. The bridge has semicircular cutwaters that create pedestrian retreats on the roadway. A band runs below the parapet, which is topped with segmental coping. The parapets return as abutments in the same style.
On the outside face of the downstream parapet, there is a panel inscribed with "REBUILT 1788 1789 II Blegborough T Hogg MAYORS," which has recently been copied onto the inside face of the upstream parapet. The center of the inside face of the downstream parapet has a recut panel inscribed "To Askrigg 18, To Lancaster 56 Miles," along with a benchmark below it. The bridge stands on the site of an older bridge that had four arches, with half of the structure located in the parish of Richmond. It is also recognized as an Ancient Monument.
