Description
The Chapel of St Mary is a chapel dating from the 12th century, with 13th-century angle buttresses and 14th-century windows, alongside later repairs. It is constructed from coursed rubble of magnesian limestone and has a stone slate roof. The chapel consists of two bays and features diagonal buttresses at the west end and angle buttresses at the east end, all with offsets. The south entrance has a round-arched plank door with a continuously moulded surround beneath a hood-mould. Both the south and north sides have two-light, straight-headed windows with pointed, trefoiled lights. A bell turret is located at the west gable, while the east end has a two-light pointed window with reticulated tracery under a hood-mould.
Inside, there is a stone altar table that incorporates a medieval tomb slab featuring a foliated calvary cross. The floor has five medieval inscribed slabs dedicated to the Tyas family. The chapel also contains a medieval font with a square base that widens to a circular rim, late medieval benches, and a triple-decker 18th-century pulpit. An inscription on the rear of the door states: 'RE-DEDICATED BY THE BISHOP OF WHITBY NOV. 6TH. 1932: / BUILT ABOUT 1150 A.D. / This Chappell Repaired in 1784 / RESTORED BY VOLUNTARY LABOUR IN CHARGE OF / JACK WINTERBURN, 1932 A.D. / REV. T. BOTTOMLEY / VICAR OF SAXTON'.
