Description

34 and 36 Ousegate are a pair of mid-19th century commercial properties with accommodation above, each featuring a rear range that has been altered in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The buildings are constructed from hand-made red bricks, with a slate roof on the front range and orange clay tiles on the rear ranges. The front range is aligned from north-west to south-east and includes a central passage flanked by two two-storey rear ranges, each approximately 15 meters long.

The front facade rises three storeys and consists of three bays, with number 36 occupying the two bays on the left. The ground floor of number 36 features a reproduction late-19th century shopfront with two windows and a recessed doorway on the left. Number 34 has a modern panelled double door and two plate glass shop windows with a brick stall riser. Between the two shops, there is a passageway closed by a six-panel door topped with a multi-pane rectangular fanlight.

The first floor is illuminated by three 16-pane unhorned flush-framed sash windows with exposed sash boxes, painted wedge lintels, and projecting sills. The second floor has similar four-over-eight sash windows. The roof is covered in Welsh slate, featuring coped gables and shaped kneelers, with a truncated brick ridge stack offset to the right. The ogee gutters and downpipes are made of cast iron and are supported by a bracketed fascia board.
