Description
The Blacksmith's Shop and Pig Sty at Birchfield Farm is a two-storey structure dating from the late 18th century. It is built from coursed dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof, along with a single ashlar chimney stack and quoins.
The east front has an off-centre plank door leading into the blacksmith's shop, with a square fixed window to the left. To the right, there is another similar window and a broad stable door at the right end. The north gable front features an external stone staircase leading to an upper central door, which has a flush ashlar surround. To the right of this door is a small square opening, also with a flush ashlar surround. The west front is blank, while the south gable contains pigsties with two segmental arches on the ground floor. These arches have projecting walls that enclose two pens, which include three ashlar feeding troughs built into the front walls, above a square opening.
