Description
The Barton Seagrave War Memorial is a First World War memorial, built around 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is located on a small green next to the churchyard of St Botolph’s Church, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial features a well-carved limestone Calvary, with a shaft that rises from a sloping square plinth set on an octagonal base. The plinth has inscriptions on three faces. The 12 o'clock face reads: "REMEMBER WITH/ PRAYER AND GRATITUDE/ (names)/ OF BARTON SEAGRAVE/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919/ GRANT THEM O LORD THINE ETERNAL PEACE." The 6 o'clock face states: "THIS MEMORIAL IS/ ERECTED BY PUBLIC/ SUBSCRIPTION." The 3 o'clock face commemorates those who fell in the Second World War, stating: "ALSO THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE WAR 1939 - 45./ (names)/ GOD SHALL WIPE AWAY ALL TEARS FROM/ THEIR EYES AND THERE SHALL BE NO/ MORE DEATH NEITHER SORROW/ NOR CRYING NEITHER SHALL THERE BE/ ANY MORE PAIN FOR THE FORMER THINGS ARE/ PASSED AWAY/ REVELATION 21.4."
