Description
The Burnham War Memorial is located in the northwest corner of Burnham Park, accessible from the High Street. It features a freestanding wheel cross made of Portland stone, adorned with decorative Celtic-style knotwork relief carvings. In front of the cross stands a bronze statue of a full-sized soldier in uniform, holding a rifle. Both the cross and the statue rest on a square plinth, which is elevated on a two-stepped base. The memorial is set on an oval grassed mound, bordered by a curved Portland stone wall.
On the plinth, below the bronze figure, the years 1914 – 1919 are displayed in bronze numbers, accompanied by a later brass plaque that reads 1939 – 1945/ AND/ OTHER/ CONFLICTS. The rear of the plinth features a bronze wreath, beneath which is the inscription "THEIR NAMES/ SHALL BE HAD/ IN REMEMBRANCE." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the sides of the plinth.
On the curved wall flanking the entrance to the memorial, the years 1939 – 1945 are presented in bronze letters, surrounded by the names of those who fell during the Second World War.
