Lower Farmhouse with Attached Front Boundary Wall

Lower Farmhouse with an attached front boundary wall is a house that likely dates from the 17th century at the southern end. It was extended and altered around 1870, possibly by George Devey, to serve as the main farm for the Rothschild estate in the village. The building features imitation timber framing with roughcast infill and some red brick on an irregular stone plinth. The roof is tiled, with rectangular brick stacks at each end that have oversailing heads, a large central stack with four elaborately moulded terracotta shafts, and a projecting stack to the right of center with two similar shafts. There is an inset panel below and a small tiled oven projection at ground level.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with the left part also having an attic. It has two gables with shaped and fretted bargeboards and finials, and three-light leaded casements. A large enclosed gabled porch is located on the ground floor, while most other windows are three-light wood casements, some featuring arched lights. Two windows on the right side of the first floor slightly project. To the right, there is an irregular brick stable wing with one projecting gable, which has been altered at the northern end. The rear elevation features incised plaster panels depicting rural scenes, which have been restored. The front elevation displays the Rothschild crest on a moulded panel to the right of the large chimney. There is also a small two-storey gabled projection to the left of the southern gable.

The attached front garden wall runs the entire length of the frontage and includes brick piers with offset heads and decorative brick openwork panels, topped with ogee moulded brick coping.
