Description

These are a group of 17th-century cottages located on Hawridge Lane in Bellingdon. They are built of chequer brick and have roofs covered with 19th-century mansard tiles and slate, featuring three gabled dormers and dentil brick eaves. The cottages are two storeys high, with a first-floor band featuring a cavetto moulding. They have three double-hung sashes in reveals with cambered heads and flat-topped brick arches; the first floor is a 19th-century addition. Plain shutters are present on the ground floor. The return elevation on the left side features a chimney stack with diaper pattern brickwork and a round arched panel, raised brick imposts, and a key. These cottages were the residence of D.H. Lawrence from August 1914 to January 1915.
