Description
The park wall at Remnantz, which includes bee boles, an alcove, and attached outhouses, runs along Portlands Alley and extends westwards to the stables at Remnantz. This structure dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The wall is built of red, plum, and biscuit-coloured brick in both Flemish and English bonds, topped with ridged brick and flat tile coping. The attached outhouses, which are partly derelict, feature gabled and lean-to roofs made of Welsh slate.
Along Portlands Alley, the wall is supported by pilaster buttresses with offset tops and rises at the north end, where it turns west towards the stables. This section of the wall contains various doorways, some of which have been inserted, as well as two cross-vents. Notably, there is a set of six bee-boles arranged in two tiers of three, featuring shallow, gauged-brick round-arched recesses with plastered interiors. The two bee-boles on the left of the upper tier are deeper and open into a lean-to on the north side of the wall, with openings that have tile cills and end-pilasters topped with abaci and cornices.
Further west, the plastered alcove is set within a lean-to and features a gauged-brick elliptical arch with a raised "keystone" supported by square columns with moulded bases and cornices. Flanking pilasters rise to the full height of the wall and are topped with stone ball finials. Inside the alcove is a bricked-up entrance to the grounds of Remnantz House. This structure represents an interesting example of 18th-century garden walls.
