Description
Skittle Alley is a late 19th-century structure located in the grounds of The Chalet, built for Alfred de Rothschild of Halton House to entertain guests. The alley features a cast-iron frame with scroll-enriched trusses, each adorned with the Rothschild monogram. It has a glazed roof supported by cast-iron eaves brackets designed to resemble tree branches, with crossed twigs forming squares along the top of the eaves. The building is single-storey and consists of six bays, with brick gable end walls and sides that are glazed, complemented by a continuous timber plank apron. A log wheel device for opening the roof has survived. Guests would arrive from Halton House in a pony carriage to enjoy the views and spend the day, while a pack of spaniels was kept in nearby kennels.
