Description

House. It is a C17 or earlier timber-framed building with red brick and flint infilling, now partly tile-hung. The building has two tile-hung gables with plaster below them, a tiled roof with a pentice to the north, and two storeys with three windows, which are casement windows.

The entry for Stephens Cottage and Tudor Cottage describes an early C17 timber framed building that was refaced and extended in the C19 and altered in the C20. The west front is of painted brick, with the first floor tile-hung. It has a tiled roof with an off-centre brick stack and an end cemented stack. The south front of Stephens Cottage includes an early C19 two-storey rendered extension to the left, with a tiled gable and end brick stack. To the right, the front has been refronted in brick in English bond with rendered and tiled C20 casements above. The east front has an original door surround and a modern porch. The north front has a deep catslide roof with a C20 hipped one-bay extension rising through it.

The interior of Stephens Cottage features exposed square framing with a midrail. A lounge contains a 2-inch chamfered spine beam with lamb's tongue stops, a brick open fireplace with a wooden bressumer, a fine late C17 corner cupboard, and a fine early C17 staircase with a square newel post with a polyhedron finial and a panelled cupboard opposite, featuring cock's head hinges. Above the stairs, a small plank door leads to a loft in the outshut, probably originally an apple store. The roof has collar beams and through purlins with slightly curved tension braces. The early C19 extension contains a corner cupboard dating to around 1820. The interior of Tudor Cottage was not inspected. Records show the building was let to the rector in 1660.
