Description

Streat Place is a house that was likely built by Walter Dobell between 1607 and 1627 and was home to the Dobell family until 1734. The building is E-shaped, with its main facade facing east, and consists of three storeys with six windows. The exterior is faced with knapped flints and features long and short ashlar quoins at each window bay. It has a Horsham slab roof and casement windows with stone mullions and transoms.

The two projecting wings each have a bay on the ground and first floors, which contain windows with two tiers of six lights and gables above, complete with kneelers and finials at the apex. Between the wings are four smaller gables. There is a smaller projection at the angle of the north-east wing, and a central porch situated between the north-east and south-east wings. The porch features a doorway with fluted pilasters, a projecting cornice on console brackets, and a cartouche above.

The north wall displays a massive chimney breast made of flints and brick, while the south wall also has a large chimney breast, which is faced with roughcast on the ground floor and tile-hung above. Inside, the hall contains a contemporary stone fireplace, and a room in the south-east wing features a similar fireplace along with early 17th-century panelling.
