Description
The Parish Church of St Mary is a cruciform building located in Stoughton Village. The chancel and transepts date back to the 11th century, while the south transept was converted into a tower in the 14th century. The nave was built in the 13th century, and the south porch, originally from the 17th century, was rebuilt in the 19th century. The porch is made of red brick, while the rest of the church is constructed from flints, which, except for the chancel, have been rendered with Roman cement. This exterior does not reflect the quality of the interior, which features a particularly fine 11th-century chancel arch and a mid-13th-century trefoil-headed piscina, with parts made of Purbeck marble from the 12th century.
